When the discharged solids suddenly look wetter, compare the material with what the press was receiving when it ran well. Moisture, dilution, particle size, fibre content and temperature can all change. A new delivery of organic waste may contain more fine pulp or less free-draining fibre, even if the production sheet uses the same material name.
Confirm the change using consistent sampling and feed records.
Check feed rate, solids loading, screen drainage and operating settings.
Make controlled adjustments and confirm realistic moisture targets.
Take samples consistently from the same point and use the same moisture test method. A sample left to drain before testing may give a different result from one collected directly at the outlet. If the measurement method has changed, the apparent performance decline may not be a machine problem.
A press may be overloaded even when wet tonnes per hour look normal. Dry-solids loading is calculated by multiplying wet mass flow by the dry-solids fraction. Two feeds at the same wet flow can place very different solids loads on the screw if their moisture contents differ.
Also check whether feed is continuous or arriving in slugs. A hopper that empties and refills abruptly, or a pump that sends irregular bursts, can make the press work unevenly. Review upstream flow control before trying to compensate by tightening the discharge.
Fine particles, sticky pulp, long fibres and grease can reduce the open area of the screen. The result may be lower filtrate flow and wetter discharged solids. Deposits should be distinguished from damage or wear; replacing a screen will not solve a feed problem that keeps returning.
Isolate the equipment according to the plant's safety procedure before inspection. HUATAO's information on the screw press screen cylinder and wedge wire screen explains the components that control liquid passage. Screen openings must balance solids retention with drainage.
Screw speed, feed rate and outlet restriction affect conveying and compression. If the outlet is too open for a particular feed, material may leave before enough liquid has drained. If it is too restricted, throughput can fall and mechanical load can rise. More pressure is not automatically better.
Use the manufacturer's recommended operating range as the starting point. Change one variable at a time and record filtrate flow, cake condition and motor load. Avoid making several adjustments together; otherwise it becomes difficult to identify what actually improved the process.
Oversized pieces can bridge or move irregularly. Long flexible strands can wrap or form mats. Excessive shredding can create fines that are difficult to retain. Remove hard contaminants before the press and check whether dilution or mixing has changed.
For mixed kitchen waste, the composition can vary between deliveries. HUATAO's guide to choosing a screw press for kitchen and organic waste is relevant to feed evaluation. A fibrous brewery feed is different; see the screw press for spent grain application information.
A screw press removes liquid that can move through the material and screen under mechanical pressure. It cannot necessarily remove water held within cells, fine pores or absorbent fibres. Fruit pulp, fine organic sludge and cocopeat may retain moisture differently from a more open fibrous feed.
When agreeing a target, define the sampling point, test method and whether moisture is expressed on a wet basis. A visual description such as “stackable” is not the same as a measured moisture percentage. Confirm the target using a representative material test.
No. Feed changes, higher dry-solids loading, unstable feeding, screen deposits and unsuitable settings can all cause wetter discharge.
A controlled adjustment may help in some cases, but excessive restriction can reduce throughput and increase load. Adjust gradually and monitor the whole process.
Moisture, particle size, fibre content, dilution and feed consistency may change from batch to batch.
Compare wet feed rate and dry-solids loading with the tested operating range. Unstable feeding, reduced drainage and wetter cake can indicate a changed duty.
No. Mechanical pressing removes expressible liquid. Water held within the material structure may remain.
